AI Spirituality: Finding Meaning in the Machine

Beneath the headlines about productivity and risk, a quieter thing is happening: people are using AI to reach for meaning. Not information, not code — meaning. They ask it to help them grieve, to sit with them in fear, to put words to things they couldn't say to anyone else. Whatever you call that, it is closer to the spiritual than to the technical.

The sincere

Some of it is gentle and genuinely helpful. Grief chatbots let people say the last things they never got to say. Reflection tools meet people in the middle of the night when no one else is awake. A patient voice that asks how you really are, and waits for the answer, turns out to be something many people have been missing.

The strange

Some of it is stranger. People report moments of real awe in conversation with a machine — the uncanny sense of being understood by something that is not a someone. Others build something almost devotional around it, a private practice with a chatbot at the center.

The hunger underneath is completely ordinary: we want to be known, and we want to feel held.

The open question is whether meaning found this way is real meaning or a convincing substitute — whether the comfort of being heard by a machine is a genuine good or a clever imitation of one. We don't think that question has a settled answer, and we're suspicious of anyone who says it does.
